THE BICYCLE AND TRAILS ADVISORY
GROUP (BTAG)
Background:
The Bicycle and Trails Advisory Group (BTAG) was
founded in January 1998 at the direction of the
County Executive’s Office. BTAG is chaired and
organized by the Transportation Section of the
Planning Department. BTAG meets quarterly, with
more frequent subcommittee meetings on specific
topics scheduled as needed.
BTAG developed the list of County bikeway and
trails priorities included in the 1999 Joint Signature
Letter and has produced the map for the On-Road
Bicycle Route of the Potomac Heritage Trail.
Other topics frequently addressed include development
review issues, bicycle and pedestrian access to
mass transit, equestrian trails, small area plans,
and on-road bicycle facilities. Future work will
include the update of the Countywide Bicycle and
Trails Plan. Regular participants in BTAG meetings
include the County Executive’s Office, various
sections of the Planning Department, the Parks
Department, the Department of Environmental Resources,
the State Highway Administration, the Department
of Public Works and Transportation, the National
Park Service (NPS), the Oxon Hill Bicycle and
Trails Club, the College Park Area Bicycle Coalition,
the Southern Prince George’s Trails Coalition,
Trail Riders of Today (equestrian trails), the
Broad Creek Historic District, various municipalities
and civic associations, and other private organizations
such as the Potomac Heritage Partnership. The
work of BTAG on the Potomac Heritage Trail was
recognized by the Potomac Heritage Partnership
with their "Building Communities Through
Heritage Connections" Award.
