There are three ways ancient and modern art disappears. As in Iraq and Syria today, works are looted from sites or museums. Some works are stolen from museums and private collections. The third process is forging. A clever forger can create a work that fools even the experts. Forgers don’t steal art per se, they steal from the people who buy their fraudulent statues and paintings. In this lecture, Susan McCarter, adjunct professor emeritus of Near Eastern Studies at three major universities, will discuss the technical aspects of forging paintings and give examples of successful forgers and the works they have created.
