This exhibit highlights some of the most notable African-American doctors and nurses, and some of the little-known black hospitals in the metropolitan area and abroad. Not long after the turn of the century, the nation had about 200 hospitals built primarily to serve Blacks. For Black healthcare professionals, these hospitals were considered meccas. For Black patients, they were welcome alternatives to being treated in neglected corners of segregated hospitals.
