Information
Management Division
The
Information Management Division (IMD) works to identify,
assemble, process, analyze and report statistical data
and other information essential to the Commission's
work program for County planning and land development.
The Division manages the Department's geographic information
systems and data processing services as part of its
overall mission.
The Division's functional responsibilities are managed
by two sections: the Data Systems Section and the Geographic
Information Systems Section.
Data
Systems Section
The
Data Systems Section consists of two groups: The Network/Desktop
Computing Group and the Database/Applications Development
Group. The Network/Desktop Computing Group is responsible
for the systems administration of the Department's Local
Area Network (LAN). This includes support to the Department's
200± personal computers, including all standard
software packages, and support to all devices, such
as printers, plotters, tape drives, scanners, etc. The
Database /Applications Development Group is responsible
for the systems administration of the Department file
server and all hardware and software components. The
section is also responsible for maintaining the Department's
databases and related software applications. This includes
the creation of specialized reports and the development
of individual project-related applications.
Geographic
Information Systems Section
The
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Section is the
central repository of geographic information for Prince
George's County. The section is responsible for the
development, maintenance, update, analyses, custom display
and distribution of geographic information to the various
divisions of the Department, other County agencies and
the public. There are currently more than 70 different
spatial layers in the repository. The layers are divided
into two categories: Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission
(WSSC) tiling structure, and Countywide layers. The
WSSC tiling divides the county into 660 tiles compiled
at a scale of 1:2400. The repository also contains orthophotography
captured at various resolutions. The GIS products and
services support the Department’s planning and decision-making
processes. The section also develops and provides GIS
user-friendly applications and training to its internal
staff and external customers.
