ENVIRONMENTAL FAST FACTS

1. Prince George’s County has 952 miles of streams
.

2. There were 139,900 acres of woodland in the county in 2000.

3. Streams flow into three major rivers in the county.

4. The highest point in the county is 443 feet high and is located in Laurel.

5. The lowest point in the county is located in Tidal Shorelines.

6. Sand and gravel are nonrenewable natural resources that exist in the county and are critical to the construction of new buildings.

7. Timber, fish and crabs are renewable natural resources that exist in the county.

8. 317 types of birds have been seen in the county.

9. Nine kinds of turtles exist in the county.

10. Belt Woods is the only remaining virgin forest in the national capital area.

11. Piscataway National Park protects the areas that people see from Mount Vernon (Washington’s home).

12. Of the 265 champion trees in the State of Maryland, 23 are in the county.

13. In 1989, Prince George's County in the state of Maryland adopted the first Woodland Conservation Ordinance.

14. Native plants species are living things that occur naturally in a particular climate or region without the help of people. Plants that have been introduced to an area by people are called non-native plants.
