Welcome to The Maryland-National Capital
Park and Planning Commission's (M-NCPPC) Youth's Page,
a site designed especially
for young people. M-NCPPC is a 75+ year old award winning
organization, which provides parks and recreation services
and helps communities determine what and how development
occurs in both Prince George's and Montgomery Counties
(in Montgomery County the recreation services are provided
by Montgomery County government) in Maryland. This site
applies specifically to the work of the Prince George's
Planning Department, where
planners,
engineers, architects, graphic designers, computer technicians
and many other staff persons
- work with the community to develop plans that
guide future development
- review and comment on development proposals in the community
- conduct studies of the county's environment and historic
resources
- conduct traffic and transportation studies about roadway
improvements in the county
- provide property information on zoning (what can be built
where) and maps
- assemble statistics about the people that make up the community
Did you ever wonder how it's decided that a school or
a park should be developed at a particular location in
the neighborhood, or how wide a road should be, or if
a traffic light should be installed at a particular location,
or where the streams and historic properties are that
need to be protected in the community, or how people
decide if a location is good to open a business, or who
decides street names and house addresses? Much of this
is the job of Planners or people in related job professions.
This web page is designed to introduce you to the work
of the Planning Department and many aspects of life in
Prince George's County, Maryland. Much of this information
will be helpful in your educational process and in completing
various school projects. It is designed as a fun way
to learn, maybe you will consider becoming a Planner someday.
