September Events with the Department of Parks and Recreation

 

Riverdale, MD – As summer comes to an end, find yourself at one of the many events offered by the Department of Parks and Recreation this September.

WHAT: Fall Food Truck Frenzy and Family Fun Fest

WHEN: Sunday, September 23, 2018, from 12 PM – 4 PM

WHERE: Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772

Audience: All ages
COST: 
FREE; Food, rides and games have a nominal fee.   

Food Trucks and Family Fun will be the focus of the day! Listen to music provided by DJ Gully, enjoy a magic show or visit the Wonderful World of Watkins for special prices on the train/carousel and miniature golf. With over 10 food trucks on site, there will be lots of food to choose from!


WHAT: 37th Annual Hispanic Festival

WHEN: Sunday, September 16, 12 noon - 6 PM

WHERE: Lane Manor Park 7601 West Park Dr. & University Blvd. Adelphi, MD, 20783

COST: FREE; Food, rides and games have a nominal fee. 


The Hispanic Festival serves as the kick-off event for Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15 – 10/15) and offers a variety of activities, entertainment, and cultural experiences for the entire family:

  • Carnival rides and games
  • Craft booths
  • Dance performers
  • Ethnic foods
  • Exhibitors/displays
  • Face painting
  • Interactive teen's and children's area
  • Music
  • Pony rides
  • Live entertainment


Bring the family and celebrate the rich heritage of our Hispanic communities. There will be FREE shuttle rides from Langley Park-McCormick Elementary School in Langley Park and Rosa Parks Elementary School in Hyattsville. Shuttle rides begin at 11:30 am and leave every 30 minutes.

 

WHAT: Power of She Empowerment Summit
WHEN: 
Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9 AM – 4 PM
WHERE: 
Oakcrest Community Center, 1300 Capitol Heights Blvd, Capitol Heights, MD 20743

Audience: Girls, Ages 12-15 
COST: 
Resident: $10; Non-resident: $15. Parent workshops included: Mother/Daughter combo fee: $15


This summit will empower, engage and encourage teen girls while giving parents tools to embrace and understand their daughters as they embark on their adolescent journey. Among the summit events will be Parent and Teen discussions, as well as a working lunch with innovative STEAM activities.


Parents' discussion topics include:

  • How to keep my daughter safe
  • Understanding my daughter's mood swings

Teens' discussions topics include:

  • Self-esteem
  • Self-love
  • Social Media
  • Dating: Relationships/Healthy female relationships

 

WHAT: Celebrate Baden Day
WHEN: Saturday, September 29, from 12 PM – 5 PM 
WHERE: 
Baden Community Center, 13601 Baden-Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613
Audience: All ages
COST: FREE 

 

Community vendors, Kids Activity Zone w/ games, face painting, mechanical rides and more! Music and great food round out this wonderful community event!
