M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Announces

Giving Tuesday Campaign to Benefit Peace Cross Restoration

Riverdale, MD – Today the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County announced its 2020 Giving Tuesday campaign. All donations received through Giving Tuesday, December 1, 2020, will be designated for the restoration of the Bladensburg Peace Cross Memorial.

On June 19, 2019, in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 7-2 to allow a Veteran’s memorial cross to continue to stand on public land in Maryland. The 40-foot-tall monument, commonly referred to as the Peace Cross, was dedicated in 1925 in the town of Bladensburg by Gold Star Mothers and The American Legion. It is dedicated in memory of the service and sacrifice of the 49 county residents who died in World War I. Standing for 95 years, the Cross is now in need of extensive restoration and refurbishment.

Resource Development Officer, Tracy Wright, stated “Funds are needed to begin this vital endeavor. To address the need, the Department of Parks and Recreation will use all funds from Giving Tuesday towards repairing the Peace Cross.” She continued, “We encourage the community to join us and help support the restoration of this historical monument.”

Join the global celebration of giving and help refurbish the Peace Cross Memorial with your donation through December 1st. Your generosity makes a difference. To participate in the campaign, visit www.pgparks.com/4890/Friends-of-the-Parks and click the Peace Cross button.
