M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Announces
Hispanic Heritage Month Events
Riverdale, MD - September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County takes time to celebrate our Hispanic community. Over 19% of our County’s population has roots from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Spain, or one of the many other countries in the Spanish-speaking world. Join us in celebrating this rich culture at one of our many events commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month. Here are just a few of our offerings for 2021:
Thursday, September 16 – October 28
Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope - This art exhibit at Publick Playhouse will celebrate Hispanic Heritage and culture through the artwork of two female artists. María Luisa Benavides, also known as Maripi, is inspired by the biodiversity and culture of her home country, Costa Rica. She creates colorful paintings, often in mandala forms, that feature vivid color and intricate designs. María Brito is a painter who is inspired by the vitality of plants and living nature, often recalled from her home country of Venezuela.
Saturday, September 18, 1–4 pm
Fiesta Del Sur - Come out and celebrate with us at this fun-filled day with music, entertainment, food trucks, games and activities for the entire family. Entertainers will include Ballet Folklore from El Salvador, Beverly Perez Singer, Bachata VIP Band and the Grupo Miel Band.
Saturday, October 2, 10am-4pm
Latinas in Aviation Global Festival 2021 - Join the College Park Aviation Museum and Airport as we honor Latinas in aviation. Watch as pilots featured in the Latinas in Aviation book fly into the College Park Airport and share their unique experiences and passion for aviation. This one-of-kind event gives the opportunity to meet and hear from contributing authors while learning about the magic of aviation. In addition to the special Fly-In, the day will be filled with speaker panels, mentoring circles, crafts, food, and we will also be giving out the book for free to families.
Friday, October 15, 7-9:30 pm
Movie Under the Stars: Pixar’s Coco - Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a night under the stars featuring the Pixar sensational movie, Coco. Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto Dela Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel and his 2 new friends embark on an adventure to the colorful Land of the Dead to unlock the real story behind his family’s history. With food trucks onsite, this will be a fun outing for the entire family.
