Stanton as the new Director of the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County. Effective Monday, July 21, 2025, Stanton will assume leadership of the Department comprised of more than 5,000 full and part-time employees, an unionized park police force, and a $492 million operating budget – all supporting 200+ miles of trails, 300+ athletic fields, four regional parks, four golf courses, an equestrian center, the oldest continuously operating airport in the world, a minor league baseball stadium, community and senior activity centers, ice skating rinks, and more.

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Planning Board of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) announces its appointment of Gwen McCall-Winston as the new Deputy Planning Director of Administration of the M-NCPPC Prince George’s County Planning Department. Effective Monday, July 21, 2025, McCall-Winston will provide high-level administrative oversight of the Planning Department’s Human Resources team and the Information Management, Intake and Regulatory Review, and Management Services Divisions.
LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Planning Board of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) welcomes The Honorable Darryl Barnes as Chairman of the five-member Planning Board. Appointed by Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy and confirmed by the Prince George’s County Council following a public hearing, Barnes was sworn in on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. Barnes will serve a four-year term expiring on June 14, 2029.

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks will be opening its newest park in downtown Silver Spring in the spring of 2026 and is inviting the public to help choose its name. Currently referred to as the South Silver Spring Urban Park, the one-acre park at 1110 East-West Highway (the former National Tire and Battery site) is under construction. The park will serve as an active, urban, recreational space featuring a promenade, a playground, a fitness area, a multi-sports court, a dog run, and a picnic area, among other amenities.
WHEATON, Md. – The Butterfly Experience at Brookside Gardens is returning to Montgomery Parks this spring. Formerly known as Wings of Fancy, the exhibit is relaunching on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 10 a.m., and runs through Sunday, September 21, 2025. Advanced timed tickets go on sale Monday, March 3.
Visitors to the seasonal exhibit will get an intimate, up-close look at hundreds of brilliant live butterflies from North America, Costa Rica, Africa, and Asia as they flutter among colorful flowers throughout Brookside Gardens’ South Conservatory. Trained staff and volunteers will highlight the stages of metamorphosis, the important role butterflies play in healthy ecosystems, and how to ensure these beautiful insects thrive in our own gardens.
“We’re very excited The Butterfly Experience at Brookside Gardens is back, and we know the community is, too,” said Stephanie Oberle, director of Brookside Gardens. “The exhibit is better than ever. Visitors will be immersed in a dazzling display of butterflies from around the world while learning the important roles these pollinators play in a variety of ecosystems. We can’t wait for everyone to visit.”
LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission announces the release of Go Prince George’s Preliminary Countywide Master Plan of Transportation. This long-range multi-modal transportation plan sets a guiding vision, supporting goals, and measurable actions to transform the County’s transportation network by creating more travel options and focusing on the movement of people versus the sole movement of vehicles. The Preliminary Countywide Master Plan of Transportation will advance the vision and goals of Plan Prince George’s 2035 – the County’s approved general plan, replace the 2009 Approved Countywide Master Plan of Transportation, and combine previously adopted transportation policies and recommendations for a comprehensive approach throughout the County.
Wheaton, Md. – At its February 20 meeting, the Montgomery County Planning Board, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), reviewed and approved the Scope of Work for the Germantown Sector Plan Amendment. The Scope of Work includes a boundary for the sector plan encompassing the Germantown Town Center and mix of employment centers, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods on both sides of I-270. The Montgomery College Germantown campus and the U.S. Department of Energy campus are the largest sites within the plan area.
LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Planning Board of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) announces that its weekly meetings will be held in a hybrid format beginning on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The Planning Board will resume hosting in-person meetings and continue to offer virtual participation options. Individuals will now be able to view and provide verbal testimony in person at the M-NCPPC Largo Headquarters at 1616 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD 20774 in addition to virtual participation.
LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Planning Board of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) announced Thursday during its weekly meeting the resignation of Commissioner William Doerner, effective February 14, 2025. In his parting words, Commissioner Doerner stated, “It’s been a pleasure to serve in this role on behalf of the residents. We all bring to this role different perspectives based on our own unique backgrounds, life experiences, and trainings. I feel blessed to have had that opportunity.”
